Exactly one year after the grand and spectacular opening of the European Capital of Culture, Plovdiv artists and cultural organizations participating in the project celebrate their success.
The closing event puts an end of the calendar year marked by the title European Capital of Culture, but the programme, partnerships, transformation, fuse and revive processes that started with it go on.
Unlike all other large-scale productions in the programme, which are open and aimed at a wide range of audiences and fans from the country and abroad, the closing event is dedicated specifically to Plovdiv citizens only – the people who remain with the legacy of this initiative and with its changes.
The Plovdiv 2019 Foundation has commissioned a team from the Plovdiv State Opera to organise the official ceremony, which will take place at the Boris Hristov House of Culture on 12 January 2020.
The director is Mrs Nina Naydenova – the General Manager of the State Opera in Plovdiv. Access to the ceremony is through invitation only. Doors open at 7 p.m. A classical music programme will accompany the event with the participation of children from Plovdiv (winners of music competitions) and a chamber orchestra from the Plovdiv Opera guest-led by the violin virtuoso Lia Petrova. Ms Petrova plays on a 1690 Matteo Goffriller violin she has on loan from the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. During the performances, retrospective footage will be presenting the hundreds of events from the programme of the Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture initiative.
The ceremony will be live-streamed on Plovdiv 2019 Official Facebook page and online channels at 7 p.m. EET local (6 p.m. CET).
The Plovdiv 2019 Foundation, the municipal organisation that runs the ECoC 2019 project in Bulgaria, has prepared a special message to the two new Capitals of Culture. The words of the message have been engraved on a figurine that symbolises the Plovdiv 2019 motto, STAYING TOGETHER. The symbol — the work of the noted Plovdiv-based artist Atanas Hranov — is a piece of the history of Plovdiv and a fragment of the city’s Seventh Hill.
The closing ceremony is a production of ‘Plovdiv 2019’ in partnership with the State Opera in Plovdiv and local organizations.
