The "Chitalishta" project is part of the REVIVE platform, within the "Culture Meets People" cluster, in which culture and art are means for building stable communities and ensuring audiences an easy, decentralized access to events and art practices.

Aim of the Chitalishta Project

As part of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019, the "Chitalishta" project seeks to revive and set in motion the activities of these communal centres in the direction of innovation and experimenting and towards a new kind of sustainable self-expression in the fields of culture, art and education.

Chitalishta Open Call

After the announcement by the Plovdiv 2019 Foundation of the "Chitalishta open call", addressed to the centres in the Central South Region (it includes the regions Plovdiv, Smolyan, Haskovo, Kardzhali and Pazardzhik), and following a series of meetings in which partners got to know each other and exchanged information, a total of 247 projects were submitted from more than 160 chitalishta. Ninety-three of them were approved, and will begin in April 2018. The projects’ initiatives range from folk spectacles, bread making and singing competitions to light installations, vlogger workshops and graffiti art. The events contribute to communal and personal development. By employing innovative approaches and spaces, they succeed in attracting the chitalishta art production. They also encourage the participants to socialize, share their identities and their differences.
