Open Letter about the European Commission’s announcement that the planned 2023 European Capital of Culture pre-selection in the UK will not take place

To highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe is one of the main reasons for the creation and existence of the initiative European Capital of Culture – this aim is a fact and can be vital only when we are #together. Yesterday the five candidate cities from U.K. - Dundee, Nottingham, Leeds, Milton Keynes and Belfast/Derry – which applied for the title for 2023 were officially informed that Brexit is a limitation for the implementation of the initiative. The Cultural isolation is detrimental to our societies, and now, more than ever, we need free opportunities for exchange and cooperation for the benefit of cities and their citizens. Despite the not easy political situation, we need to protect the right to be #together. Two open letters were sent in support of the five cities - One from the Selection Panel and one from the Union of 23 current, previous and future ECoC cities.

The full text of the open letters might be seen in the link: Panel's letter, ECoC Family's letter.
