А contest for German translation has started

The Municipal Foundation "Plovdiv 2019", "Ivan Vazov" National Library, Pen and Quill Association and Goethe-Institut Bulgaria organize a competition for the translation of German fiction in Bulgarian. It is aimed at young people from Plovdiv at the age range from 15 to 35 years. The competition is under the project "Literary Renaissance in Plovdiv", which is part of the program of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019.

The Bulgarian translations will be judged by a competent jury according to established criteria: the content of the translation should be in line with the original text, the translation should give creatively the literary qualities of the original, the linguistic and grammatical features of the Bulgarian language.

The competition starts on February 9th. The deadline for sending the translations is March 30th, 2018.

With three prizes for each age group (15 to 19 years and 20 to 35 years), the first being a book voucher worth 150 leva. Second place gets a book voucher worth 100 leva, and the third – book voucher worth 60 leva.

The translation provides a choice between two books from Ute Wegman's "Hoover", recommended for the 15-19 age group, and "Die Liebesblödigkeit" by Wilhelm Gennicino, recommended for the 20-35 age group. The texts can be found on the facebook pages of the organizers: Pen and Quill, Literary Renaissance in Plovdiv, Goethe Institute.

Jury of the contest is Zlatka Parpulova (translator, university lecturer), Boris Minkov (author, translator, literary critic) and Rangel Trifonov (master of German philology at St. Kliment Ohridski).

The winners will be announced during the weeks in the German language from April 10 to May 3, 2018. On April 23, the winners will receive their awards at a festive event in the conference room of the National Library "Ivan Vazov" in Plovdiv. The translations of the winners in both categories will be published in the literary magazine "Page".
