The mayor of the city Mr. Zdravko Dimitrov, President Petar Stoyanov and the German Ambassador to Bulgaria H.E. Christoph Eichhorn unveil the fragment in an opening ceremony
In the year of Plovdiv - the European Capital of Culture and on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a piece of one of the symbols of freedom for modern Europe will be placed in the city under the hills.
The placing of the fragment will be celebrated with a special event, which will take place on December 19 from 16.00h in front of one of the newest exhibition spaces in the city, Exhibition Hall "2019", where in the presence of President Petar Stoyanov (1997-2002), Mayor Zdravko Dimitrov and German Ambassador to Bulgaria HE Christoph Eichhorn the fragment will be unveiled. The piece of concrete was specially painted by the iconic artist Thierry Noir and earlier in January it was part of the exhibition "Art Liberty - From the Berlin Wall to Street Art", which launched the Plovdiv 2019 European Capital of Culture. It includes a personal message left from the artist to the city and our country, which reads: "А message to future generations – let us not repeat the mistakes of the past." The initiative is from the Plovdiv 2019 Foundation and is a part of the closing events of the year of the title.
At the beginning of 2019, the only traveling collection of 30 drawings on the pieces of concrete remained displayed in the center of the city for three months and was viewed by thousands of tourists and guests. Plovdiv was the first city in Europe to feature the exhibition on the eve of the anniversary of “Europe without borders”.
The fragment is 3.60 meters in height and weighs 2.5 tons. It will remain in front of Exhibition Hall 2019 and, subsequently, will become the basis for the creation of a monument commemorating the Freedom of New Europe.
