Each autumn for more than 40 years now Plovdiv has been host to the International Painting Plein Air. Organised by the Plovdiv Painters Society, it is one of the oldest open-air events in Bulgaria.
After a five-year hiatus the Plovdiv Painting Plein Air is back, with the editions for 2017, 2018, and 2019 integrated in the programme of Plovdiv 2019. The event serves as a meeting place of artists from a host of European countries who, in keeping with tradition, put on a closing celebratory exhibition, at the Nishanyan House in Plovdiv's Old Town, of the works they created during the days of open-air painting.
The edition in 2018 (15-26 September) includes participants from Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Germany – Ana Milkovic, Aneta Ivanovska, Antonia Duende, Asparuh Sarbov, Dimitar Kirchev, Kiril Ivanov, Nadin Tsanov, Simomida Kitanovska, Hristo Nikolov.
