Plovdiv Jazz Fest

Plovdiv Jazz Fest is a highlight in the programme of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019. The international music festival for jazz music and culture is being organized by the singer Miroslava Katsarova and her company Blue M.

Jazz has been part of Plovdiv’s traditions and culture for decades. Plovdiv Jazz Fest is the successor of a ten-year tradition: It took over from the Plovdiv Jazz Evenings festival and each November welcomes some of the world’s most influential jazz artists. A string of attending events - masterclasses, jam sessions and exhibitions, among other features - will complement the main programme this year. A prize for 'lifetime achievement in jazz' has been set up, and there will be a competition for young jazz performers.

Plovdiv Jazz Fest 2016 (1-5 November) was stylistically leaning towards bossa nova and featured specially developed projects. The band of Plovdiv musicians and the concert of Four Ladies Sing Jazz were among the most acclaimed events. Music lovers savoured also performances by Kamelia Todorova, Angel Zaberski Jr., the Brazilian band Zuco 103, and the virtuoso musician Richard Bona and his jazz quintet.

Plovdiv Jazz Fest 2017 (1-4 November) welcomed three extremely influential jazz performers - Jason Moran, Joshua Redman and Donny McCaslin. Four major Bulgarian projects were presented - and Hilda Kazasyan and JP3 marked the anniversary of the birth of Ella Fitzgerald. Jazz fans were able to immerse themselves in the latest projects of Hristo Yotsov (Jazz Cats) and Antoni Donchev. The festival also featured Four Gentlemen Sing Jazz – Orlin Pavlov, Pavel Terziiski, Svilen Noev and Stefan Valdobrev performed their favourite jazz songs in arrangements specially made for the occasion.

The first performers at Plovdiv Jazz Fest 2018 (31 October – 3 November) have already been announced: Eliane Elias will open the festival on 31 October, and Jan Garbarek will close it on 3 November. The main concerts will take place at the Boris Hristov House of Culture. There will be jam sessions and attending events at the BeeBop Café. Plovdiv Jazz Fest will again bestow its lifetime achievement prize, which has previously been awarded to awarded Ognyan Videv and Veselin Nikolov. The festival will encourage young talents at the traditional Young Musicians Jazz Competition.

Special guests in 2018 edition are also Dave Holland Quartet, Dena DeRose, Theodosii Spassov & Vlatko Stefanovski.

The Brazilian jazz singer and pianist, who recently won her latest Grammy Award, will present “An Evening with Eliane Elias” on 31 October. Her programme will present highlights from her latest album featuring music from the Broadway musical “Man from la Mancha”. As was the case with her earlier releases, compositions from Eliane’s current project again reached top rankings in the jazz charts of Billboard and Spotify.

The concert of the Norwegian jazz saxophone player Jan Garbarek (after a year-long string of performances and albums - his live sessions nowadays being rare) will feature the special participation of the Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu. Mr Garbarek and his music will conclude the festival on 3 November.

Promotional-price tickets for the concerts of Eliane Elias and Jan Garbarek can be bought from the Eventim network. A limited series of 25% discount grand passes for the festival's four evenings will be released for sale at the announcement of the festival's full programme. Tickets will be available also at Plovdiv's Main Street Cash Desk, at OMV service stations, in The Mall, in branches of Orange Bookshops, Office 1 Superstore, Technopolis and Bulgarian Postal Services, as well as in the NDK Ticket Centre.
