2019, Synergy of the Future
The project, 2019, Synergy of the Future, interprets the digital archive of the Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture 2019 programпе to create a parametric data sculpture that tells the story of the city, the people, and the events that took place in 2019.
The transformed data content becomes a large-scale audiovisual installation to be presented on the facade and in the gallery space of the Exhibition Hall "2019" for a period of 3 days, from 7 to 9 October 2022. In essence, the project is close to the concept of a virtual museum.
The content is built using the modern, high-tech approaches to public art in the 21st century, including: software for interactive systems design, artificial intelligence, and machine learning algorithms. Their functions analyze the archive of Plovdiv ECoC 2019, which includes:
- Photography, video, and graphic design
- Statistics (reports, monitoring)
- Public resources (articles, community relations, and partners)
The obtained results are categorized according to various criteria and metadata. The purpose of this nonlinear historical narrative is to propose a new kind of cognitive cartography of cultural heritage that explores the organic interaction between perception and reflection, memory, and the future.
The archives are artistically transformed and organized into an abstract cinematic experience with a musical ambisonic design based on audio recordings from the events of 2019. Animation and sound interact to transform the space into a captivating 360-degree environment that allows the audience to immerse in the atmosphere of Plovdiv as the European Capital of Culture. Visitors experience in a different, in a way more internalized manner, the alternative urban reality - saturated with memories and emotions of 2019.
This phantasmagoric idea of the past will also stimulate the creative impulse of the future.
The choice where to present the visualization is not accidental - Exhibition Hall "2019" is in itself a legacy of the European Capital of Culture Plovdiv 2019. The artistic intervention on and within the architecture allows for an aesthetic rethinking of the place, transforming it into an immersive interactive environment.
The concept of the project has no analogue in Bulgaria and is extremely innovative in Europe and around the world. The team is of young professionals who are able to experiment with the latest means of expression, exploring the synergy between art and high technology. Their work contributes to the study of the relationship between tradition and modernity.
The author and leader of the project is the Plovdiv visual artist Petko Tanchev. He is a stage designer by education, and since 2016 he has been teaching "Visual Programming Tools" in the "Digital Arts" specialty of the National Academy of Arts. His professional activity includes a number of installations for national and international festivals, audiovisual performances, projects for digital scenography, video mapping projections, multimedia interactive systems. Petko is a co-founder of the groups Melformator and SenseLab and curator of the module for digital arts Creative Media Lab, part of the festival "Night / Plovdiv".
The musical composer in the project is Georgi Atanasov. He graduated in Music Technology from UEA, United Kingdom, and is the author of numerous compositions for interactive installations, theatre and film productions. His interests are focused on sound art and the development of personalized audio systems and IT technologies in the theatre.
The project focuses on the merge of cultural values and the city as a living and constantly changing organism. It recreates the unique spirit and rhythm of Plovdiv, based on the connection between its intertwined urban networks, in the context of the iconic 2019. The idea visualizes the processes that remain invisible - the interaction between citizens, environment, the pace of life, history, and cultural heritage. This multidisciplinary installation shifts the layers of the city to open up a new, inspiring vision of the future, based on our memories of the past; a kind of door in time that connects past, present, and future.
The project lays the foundations for a unique study that explores the ability of artificial intelligence to create new connections in archival memories. Its implementation supports the deeper classification of the metaphorical urban "consciousness" by offering attractive methods for presenting cultural heritage through multi-layered data manipulation outside conventional techniques. This synesthetic storytelling expands the possibilities of documents to transform reality.
