Opera Open 2019 - Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck (24 August 2019)

From 2017 the Opera Open festival mounted a strong array of shows at the Ancient Theatre, presenting premieres, co-productions and hybrid-genre projects. They will all feature active international partnerships and will attract foreign and Bulgarian artists working across Europe and around the world.

Opera Open welcomed, on the stage of the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv, leading soloists of the largest opera and ballet companies. Over the past years names such as Paata Burchuladze, Hui He, Ana Lucrecia Garcia, Elisabet Strid, Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi, Alberto Gazale, Christian Benedict, Lala Leigh, performers from the Vienna Volksoper and the Budapest Opera, prima ballet dancers from the Bolshoi Theatre and many others. During the special 2019 year the Opera Open programme will feature names of world famous performers. Opera Open will continue in August 2019 with a repeat of the summer premieres - 'Orpheus' and 'Rigoletto', as well as an International Ballet Gala with fragments of popular ballet works. As traditionally Opera Open will conclude with Verdi's 'Aida' with the participation of soloists from Arena di Verona.

Opera Open 2019 - Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck (24 August 2019)

The summer premiere of 'Orpheus and Eurydice' by Gluck has its repeat on 24 August 2019 - this is a large-scale co-production with Teatro Regio di Parma - Verdi festival, directed by the leading Italian director Stеfano Poda.

Orpheus's tragedy, Orpheus's error, his love, his guilt, his despair. A spectacle by the genius director, artist and choreographer Stefano Poda, with an unprecedented by scale and originality scenography inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Thracian and the lands of Orpheus. A visual challenge created specifically for the Ancient Theater in 2019 - powerful and twilight visions awakened by the startlingly sincere music of the cavalier Christophe Willibald Gluck. The premier role of Orpheus will be played by star countertenor Antonio Giovanni - one of the most rare opera voices!
