as Social and Educational Spaces

The project "Museums as Social and Educational Spaces - Practical Seminars for Work with Different Audiences" comes from the Bulgarian-American Commission for Educational Exchange (the Fulbright Commission), in partnership with My Museum Foundation (MMF) and the museums in Plovdiv.

It offers an extended  training project aimed at the development of educational  and social capacity of the museums in the city of Plovdiv. The project is from March 2018 to April 2019. The program of seminars and practical workshops will focus on eleven topics for museum and gallery professionals from Plovdiv and the region.

Activities

  • On February 16, 2018 at The Regional Archaeological Museum - in Plovdiv, with the participation of museum professionals a 5-hour seminar was held with two themes - "The social mission of your museum" and "Museum audiences and museum experience".  Consideration has been given to building active links between museums and other local communities on the basis of shared values; sustainable development of education and social programs in the museum; creating sustainable links with the museum audience;  building effective partnerships; introduction to current research of museum audiences.

  • On March 27, 2018 at the Regional Archaeological Museum - in Plovdiv and the Regional History Museum - in Plovdiv a 5-hour seminar with the participation of educational programme professionals was held with the topic - "Elements of a successful museum interpretation". The discussion was connected with the dialogue with audiences - the main approach in museum interpretation;  the role of interpreter as a bridge of mutual understanding between the audiences and the museum; the search for resonant histories and stories about museum objects and people;  the role of the museum in city life etc.

  • On March 28, 2018 at The  Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv and the Regional History Museum - Plovdiv a 5-hour seminar with the participation of educational programme professionals was held with the topic - "Interpretation of the museum object". The themes were - different approaches to the museum object; layered narratives at the museum texts; building flexible and productive interpretations for different audiences.
  • On March 29, 2018 at the  Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv and the Regional History Museum - Plovdiv a 5-hour seminar was held with the topic - "Thematic guides and other educational materials to help museum visitors". Basic principles and approaches in the development of tools for individual visits and group activities at museum collections were discussed.
  • On April 13, 2018 at The  Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv a 5-hour seminar was held with the topic - "The public image of your museum - in search of stable relationships with various communities". The challenges in presenting the museum’s identity; creative strategies in linking their mission with communities and businesses were discussed.

  • On June 12, 2018 at The Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv a 5-hour seminar will take place with the participation of museum professionals with the topic - "Accessible Museum". The discussion will be on the museum as a social and educational space for people with disabilities or disadvantaged communities etc.

  • On July 3, 2018 at  The Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv and The Regional History Museum - Plovdiv a 5-hour seminar will take place with the topic - "Museums and Schools", which will discuss the museum as a key factor in the preservation of historical memory and building civic identity; seeking the living story of the past (and present) in museum programs; museums at school - content and skills benchmarks in the new educational standards; preparing museum classes related to regional studies and new educational standards.

  • From 4th to 6th of July 2018 a 3-days 5-hours seminar will take place at  The Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv and The Regional History Museum - Plovdiv. The topic is "Creative approaches in museum interpretation". Engaging contact with the museum audiences; storytelling, and creative workshops and dramatization techniques of museum interpretation will be some of the themes.
  • On September 14, 2018 at The Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv and The Regional History Museum - Plovdiv a 5-hour seminar will take place with the topic "Internships and volunteers at the museum". The museum in the lives of urban communities; motivating factors for volunteering; and training of interns and volunteers for museum work  will be some of the themes.

  • On October 5, 2018 at The Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv and The Regional History Museum - Plovdiv  the last seminar will take place with the topic "Play and Creativity Museum". The lectures will be on games and interactivity in a museum context and - development, use and evaluation of educational games in the museum.

  • March - April 2019  a press conference will take place at The Regional History Museum. A publication for the museum professionals  will present the results of the workshops.
