Opening Weekend

Over the course of an extended weekend a series of events will take place at various in- and outdoor spaces across the city. Its peak will be on Saturday, 12 January 2019, with the ‘We are all Colors’ show.

    Ungraspable for Kolyo K.
    City Art Gallery (15 Alexander I Battenberg Str.)
    A large retrospective ( 7 – 30 January 2019) at the City Art Gallery presents the multifaceted work of the renowned Plovdiv artist Kolyo Karamfilov.

    Children’s Programme of City Art Gallery Plovdiv
    City Art Gallery (15 Alexander I Battenberg Str.)
    Inspired by the works of Kolyo Karamfilov, children paint in the City Art Gallery. This is an accompanying event to the exhibition Ungraspable for Kolyo K.

    The Living Planet
    Plovdiv Regional Museum of Natural History (34 Hristo G. Danov Str.)
    The Dondukova Garden (Weather permitting) will offer games for children.
    Admission is free for children! Two-metre-long fish will be ‘swimming’ in the air, and a towering light installation - a 3-metre-high ‘Earth’ balloon - will fill the dome of the planetarium.

    Plovdiv-based Chitalishta (community centres) will present at the stage in front of the Plovdiv Municipality a multi-coloured selection of music and dance, recreating the richness and beauty of Bulgarian traditions and folklore.

    On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2019, the only traveling collection of original fragments of the Berlin Wall is coming to Plovdiv (12 January - 30 March 2019).

    #Together with Matera 2019 during the Opening Weekend! The D'Ambrosio Wind Orchestra from Montescaglioso, Matera, will bring liveliness and colour accompanied by the rich sound of brass instruments.

    We Are All Colors (Opening of Plovdiv European Capital of Culture 2019)
    Tsar Boris III Obedinitel Blvd.
    The show, combining music, light and dance, will give the key to the whole year ahead and to the basic concept of the European Capital of Culture project, in which the citizens themselves are not only audiences and actors, but also creators of events. More than 1500 participants from Bulgaria and abroad will recreate on the open stage a large and colorful metaphor for all the main themes of the programme ‘Plovdiv 2019’ and their relationships under the motto ‘Together’. After the show, the renown German electronic musician Schiller will indulge the audience with an exclusive electronic DJ performance.

    Fireter and Fire Theatre TOGETHER In One Fire Performance
    Singing Fountains (Tsar Simeonova Garden)
    The performance with fire effects, puppets, fire installations, and stilts presented by Shade and Fire theatre ‘Fireter’ and FIRE THEATRE Mime Company, will transform this emblematic Plovdiv space.

We are most thrilled to invite you to join us in celebrating the opening of the ECOC 2019 with the most attractive and momentous highlight in its programme – the ‘We are all Colors’ show, on Saturday, 12 January. The very heart of Plovdiv will welcome the ceremony. The show, combining music, light and dance, will give the key to the whole year ahead and to the basic concept of the European Capital of Culture project, in which the citizens themselves are not only audiences and actors, but also creators of events. More than 1500 participants from Bulgaria and abroad will recreate on the open stage a large and colorful metaphor of all the main themes of the programme ‘Plovdiv 2019’ and their relationships under the motto ‘Together’.

The ECOC opening event is produced by the Plovdiv 2019 Foundation in partnership with international organizations, the major cultural institutions in Plovdiv, Plovdiv Municipality, artists and performers from Bulgaria and abroad. The concept of the event is created by the German artistic network phase7 performing.arts, artistic director Sven Sören Beyer.
The opening weekend programme is made jointly with partner organizations from Plovdiv and Bulgaria.
