The River

The Maritsa River plays a unifying role and has been rediscovered as the principal inspiration for creative undertakings in "The River", a project of the House of Youth in Pazardzhik.

This project is seeking non-traditional events that offer innovative approaches to art, ones that combine young people’s creativity, the experience of professional artists and the capabilities of modern digital technologies.

"The River" crosses borders in the search for intercultural dialogue. It involves work with groups of young people and artists from three Balkan states (Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey) in effort to bringing about art interventions and rethink river spaces, as well as for the ferreting out and recording of interesting Maritsa River stories.

The activities are divided into two panels:

  • "Land Art Along the Maritsa" (22-23 June 2018, 28-29 September 2018, 29-31 August 2019). The participants will be teaming up in creating contemporary art at locations along the Maritsa River.
  • "Maritsa Stories". The focus here is on the people living along the river. The small stories about the places where they live will acquire a new art context.
