ERROR ON THE MAP is produced within the ADATA artist-in-residence program of Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture 2019.

Although Maritsa riverbanks are full of wild fauna and flora, it is nowadays almost considered a wasteland or a non-place for most locals and tourists.

Why such a natural feature has been dismissed?

We found an error on the map. The riverbanks were missing.

We decided to name it Maritsa Park, draw it on the map, add signage and plan some actions.

Is it possible to resituate this area within the mental map of Plovdiv citizens? Can we enjoy its riverbanks as a common for the city preserving its natural condition?

Under the theoretical framework of post-nature and the anthropocene, "Report an error on the map" intends to reverse the traditional opposition between nature and culture. In this way Maritsa Park, a frontier space where both “poles” have been mixed in varying proportions throughout history, becomes a laboratory to rethink the way in which humans relate to the environment through empathic strategies combining art, urbanism, science and community practices, as a gateway to the future of cities, green, natural, open and inclusive.

From the end of July 2019 to the beginning of November the riverside areas in Plovdiv will be an epicenter for the realization of artistic interventions in the urban environment. The projects were selected on the basis of the proposals received from the artists who participated in the ADATA AiR programme in 2018. Their proposals were developed as a result of artistic residences in Plovdiv supported by Plovdiv 2019 Foundation in the first stage of the programme.
