At its meeting on June 27, 2020, the Board of Directors of Plovdiv 2019, with Protocol № 179 adopted an amendment to the contract under the Open Call, due to the changes forced to public events implementation caused by the COVID 19 pandemic. The updated contract can be seen HERE.
The open call was announced on 21 October 2019 in order to ensure the sustainable development of cultural initiatives and events in the city of Plovdiv, the continuation of the intensive cultural programme of ECoC 2019 and enabling the expansion of established partnerships and the validation and upgrading of the acquired and accumulated cultural capacity.
The invitation budget is from the Melina Mercouri Prize, with which the Plovdiv 2019 Foundation has been honoured for its work by a decision of the 2018 European Commission international jury. Securing the initiative's legacy with the prize budget and distributing it through an open call is happening for the first time since 2007, when the first prize was awarded to European Capitals of Culture. With this decision, the project 'Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture 2019' became a particular focus during discussions at the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education, held on 6 December 2019, and was cited as a good example of successful practice in ensuring the legacy of the initiative.
The Legacy programme ensures the preservation of the intensity of cultural life in Plovdiv in 2020 by supporting the holding of some of the most successful music, dance festivals and theatrical events of the emblematic year, as well as smaller projects related to communities, education and continuing the basic concepts of the bid book with which Plovdiv won the prestigious title.
Approved applicants will have 10 business days to confirm whether they accept the jury's decision and submit updated committee review and contract signing forms.
Three projects cancelled their funding before signing a contract: 13_L /28.11.2019, 85_L /30.11.2019 and 78_L / 30.11.2019.
